English Language Proficiency
Many international medical graduates come from a non-English speaking background and the level of English competency varies greatly. Through national agreement all the State and Territory registration boards and the Australian Medical Council have implemented an English Language Proficiency Policy that is consistent. Likewise, Employers will not consider applications from candidates who do not possess at least the required minimum standard for English language proficiency. Exemptions may apply when the applicant can provide evidence of secondary education in a country where English is the native or first language.
For further information please refer to the attached National English Language Proficiency Requirement for International Medical Graduates.
Do you meet these requirements?
The most commonly used English language test is the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Please visit the IELTS website to locate the nearest testing centre.
Alternatively, the Occupational English Test (OET) is a language test for specific professional groups. For doctors the test assesses the English language proficiency as it is used in medical and health professions.
If you still intend to seek employment in Australia, it is recommended that you prepare and book the next available test date.
Are my qualifications and experience appropriate for employment in Australia?
A national process to assess International Medical Graduates (IMGs) is being phased in from July 2007. IMGs who are eligible to proceed through the Competent Authority model will not be required to pass the Australian Medical Council (AMC) MCQ or clinical examination for the purposes of registration, but will be required to satisfactorily complete a period of workplace based performance assessment.
Please undertake the self assessment located on AMC website, to see if you qualify to proceed under the Competent Authority model. Please note that this assessment is suitable for Junior or non-specialist medical practitioners.
For further information please click on this link to the Medical Board of Queensland.
Medical Specialists' qualifications and experience are assessment through the relevant medical colleges.

Advice for Jobseekers
Communication is the key to all successful relationships, and this includes the relationship with your Burton International Recruitment consultant. Carefully convey your job requirements to your consultant along with any information that may affect your availability for employment. Remember that we share the mutual goal of finding the right job for you. You can work with us by not registering with agencies.
It takes time to build effective working relationships, and this is just not possible if you send your CV out indiscriminately. If your consultant knows you well, you are more likely to be considered for opportunities which are most relevant to you. Multiple registrations do not necessarily guarantee multiple opportunities for success.
Be honest with your consultant.
Keep your consultant informed if you are investigating other opportunities in order to negotiate the best outcome on your behalf.
Keep in touch with your consultant
Your consultant will provide you with a timeline to ensure that you are kept aware of the progress of your application. However, it is also important for you to advise your consultant of any changes relevant to your employment situation.
Listen to your consultant
Your consultant has experience and expert knowledge on the Australian health industry. While it is important to communicate salary expectations and other desired employment conditions to your consultant, remember to be realistic and rely on your consultant’s advice. Your consultant is your representative to prospective employers, and is seeking the best outcome for you.
Contact your consultant throughout your career moves
It is prudent to employ the services of your consultant again and again in your career. This way you will be taking advantage of established and valued relationship with a consultant who is better equipped to advance your career.
Update your consultant with a revised CV regularly
Even if you are not actively job seeking, this will ensure that you hear about promising opportunities that fit your career path. Be sure to include your current contact details and any aspect that may affect your employment choices and availability.
